How it all started
What made worldwide headlines 56 years ago as a medical sensation is now an almost everyday, routine procedure for doctors specializing in this field: implanting 'new' organs such as the heart, lungs, liver or kidneys into sick people.
Prof. Dr. Raimund Magreiter was a pioneer in transplantation medicine in Austria, performing the first successful kidney transplant in 1974, a liver transplant in 1977 and a pancreas transplant two years later. In 1982, the world's first combined liver and bone marrow transplant was performed, in 1983 the first heart transplant in Austria, and shortly afterwards the world's first combined liver and kidney transplant.
From 1985 to 1997, Prof. Dr. Margreiter and his team performed many transplants, many of which were the first of their kind in the world. He set the course for all Austrian TransplantCenters, currently Vienna, Linz, Graz and Innsbruck, which do outstanding work every day, passing on knowledge to colleagues at national and international levels.
Transplant for life
Transplant for life stands for courage, strength, freedom and joy of life is a positive message, an umbrella brand that was initiated to achieve a high level of sensitization and sustainable increase in awareness of the topic of transplantation among people with extraordinary campaigns and events in order to promote self-help groups, special events and medical, scientific research.
Our goal
Many organ transplant patients are getting to know their 'new life' step by step, and many 'self-help groups' and 'medical teams' are getting involved with great commitment and enthusiasm. Forum Medizin has set up a fund for the Transplant for life project, which is continuously endowed through projects and events. We use the fund to support and promote ....
